Description: BASIC FUNCTION:

The Tang lab in the Keck Science Department of the Claremont Colleges is offering an opportunity for a scientist to conduct research while developing teaching and research-mentoring skills with a group of highly motivated and talented undergraduate students. The Keck Science Department houses the biology, chemistry, and physics faculty for Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges (three of the five undergraduate Claremont Colleges). The lab is interested in understanding the mechanisms by which the LAMMER-related protein kinases function in multiple steps of eukaryotic gene expression and their interplay with the cell cycle control. A post-doctoral fellow position is available to study the novel roles of the LAMMER-related kinases in gene expression and cell cycle regulation. In addition to conducting independent research, the post-doctoral fellow will coordinate the education/student training activities with the research projects, and design investigative labs to integrate research into upper-division courses in molecular and cellular biology. The post-doctoral fellow can participate in teaching a lecture or lab course if interested in. The opportunity of this position will provide a range of valuable experience for a scientist considering a future career combining research and teaching.

The position is funded for two years. Continuation of this position is dependent upon the availability of funding. The target hire date for this position is October 15.


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Zhaohua Tang) of the NIH-funded project, this position will work independently, and collaboratively, to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

The post-doctoral fellow will carry out the experiments involving undergraduate students to investigate the multi-faceted functions of the LAMMER-related kinases in eukaryotic gene expression including mRNA export, heterochromatic gene silencing and cell cycle regulation. She/he will conduct research employing genomic tagging/gene deletion, in vivo and in vitro protein assays, genomic data mining and analyses, fluorescence and indirect immunofluorescence microscopy.

In addition to carrying out the research projects, the responsibilities of this position also consist of:

•managing projects and the overall organization of the research laboratory and activities;
•mentoring students of diverse backgrounds in scientific research;
•coordinating the education/student training with the stages of the projects;
•participating and assisting in lab and/or lecture course teaching;
•designing Inquiry-based teaching labs for upper-division courses to improve students’ experience in authentic research.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

We are seeking highly motivated candidates with expertise in molecular and cellular biology and an interest in research-teaching integration.

EDUCATION: Position requires a Ph.D. in molecular/cellular biology or biochemical sciences.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in various experimental approaches including, but not limited to, protein analysis, fluorescence microscopy and/or yeast genetics is desirable.

Expertise in molecular biology and genetics is preferred.

LICENSES: A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

•Skills in genomic data mining and analysis is preferred.

Use exceptional organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and keen attention to detail.

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are negotiable 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., 40 hours per week, 5 days per week, on a variable schedule. Overtime, holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule. This is a 12-month position eligible for benefits. The regular hours for this position may vary due to needs of the College, department or the lab.
